CT Marshall-Brown, a B1 Engineer, works as an embedded RAF member with AirTanker Services on the Voyager A330 aircraft and the award, the highest commendation in the RAF, recognises his exceptional performance in support of operations. He formally received the award in a ceremony on 14 September 2016 in London
Since joining the RAF aged 19, he has undertaken many different roles and has built up a variety of skills and disciplines. In particular, he has shown great leadership and mentoring skills within the Voyager community, which have helped to ensure the timely success of operations.
As one of the first RAF engineers to qualify on Voyager, CT Marshall-Brown has fully embraced the Whole Force approach by mentoring, guiding and encouraging countless individuals with limited military experience. He comments:
“I am very honoured to receive the award but must thank all those within the Whole Force I have worked with who have made this possible.”
Not only is CT Marshall-Brown a dedicated member of the RAF, he also volunteers in his spare time as a Search Manager with Oxfordshire Lowland Search and Rescue (OxSAR) – a self-funded charity dedicated to helping vulnerable missing people in Oxfordshire. Having experienced personally the effects that mental health, in particular dementia, has on individuals and their families, he was keen to get involved and provide support to others.
Through the RAF, CT Marshall-Brown obtained qualifications as a Mountain and Rock Climbing Leader which he has integrated perfectly into his role with OxSAR. Going that extra mile, he is helping to train the next generation of OxSAR volunteers, providing theoretical and practical navigation training. CT Marshall-Brown says:
“Volunteering with OxSAR is a busy but extremely rewarding role. I have learnt many new skills and have used them in lifesaving situations. The volunteers in the team come from all walks of life and are totally committed in providing a professional service.”
His experiences with OxSAR have also been invaluable in his RAF role. Working in an environment where civilian and military personnel with different backgrounds and skills work side by side, he has used his OxSAR experiences to good effect.
Paul Heane, Voyager Technical Training Manager, had previously been CT Marshall-Brown’s manager and nominated him for an award. Paul says:
“CT Marshall-Brown has been instrumental in preparing Voyager to support global operations. His leadership qualities, mentoring of RAF and Sponsored Reservist Engineers and passion to succeed, make him stand out as an inspirational individual. His promotion to Chief Technician and this Commendation are in recognition of his achievements and dedication to the Voyager Force and the wider community.
